For the people who came along to the LSS@Social Media Week event last night, they were treated to a goody bag of amazing coffee that Stephen Leighton from Has Bean Coffee provided us with. Steve also treated us all with the story of Has Bean and how Social Media is really helping them succeed.
Local Social Summit is very excited that Stephen Leighton owner of leading UK coffee roaster, Has Bean, has agreed to come speak at LSS@Social Media Week on 4th February 2010.
We are planning to have a conversation with Steve about how as an artisan coffee roaster he is utilising a proliferation of Social Media channels to build engagement with his customers and the coffee community in general.
In reality, we’re fanboys of Steve (and without saying the amazing coffee Hasbean brings back to the UK) and would be happy if he just comes along and shares his wonderful passion for coffee and with that his direct trade approach with growers (actually, here’s hoping we get some of that because when you think about it, that’s still Local Social). Regardless of what Steve talks about, our hope is that those who come along toLSS@Social Media Week will agree with us by the end of the evening when we say, we believe Stephen Leighton is coffee’s rising answer to Gary Vee.
To get a taste of why we think that, here’s a video from In My Mug, Steve’s weekly video show:
To fully get an understanding of how Steve is using Social Media in furthering the success of Hasbean, we suggest you:
Was recently watching Bernie Hogan’s (embdeded below as a Playlist) talk at Local Social Summit ’09.
Afterwards found this piece from the Onion News Network, which being a Friday, hopefully you will agree highlights some of the problems with being a friend of your Mom on Social Media.
The mobile panel at LSS ’09 has now moved to 11.40am and we also have a different line up of panelists – please see below.
Mobile – The Future of Apps is Bright
This panel is all about apps – in particular social and local apps (and some mapping which is of course a key part of local)… Phones started out as social devices – we made voice calls. Then we had SMS (text) and then email (think Blackberry). Now we have smart phones, iPhones and Gphones – personal mobile devices. What does the present and future hold for “local social” on Mobile? How does the rise of the iPhone and emergence of Android change the game? We will examine the fast growth of and impact of applications (and app stores). We may also see some wicked demos, discuss new business models and view what an ‘augmented’ real local world might look like. Moderator: Greg Sterling, Internet/Mobile Analyst Panel/Demos:
Claudia Poepperl, Founder & CEO at adaffix/Yellix
James Brown, CTO Cloudmade
Miriam Warren, Regional Director Yelp
Rob Hinchcliffe, UK Community Manager Qype.com
Our new panelist from Qype is Rob – here’s his bio:
Rob Hinchcliffe has been messing about on the internet since the mid-90s. In 2003 he founded the capital-centric blog Londonist, which he edited for two years. In that time Londonist became one of the most widely read blogs in the country, was nominated for a number of awards (and even won a couple), and was voted one of the top 10 most influential blogs in the UK. Rob left Londonist in 2006 to take over as Editor of Yahoo UK News, but after 18 months he decided it was time to get back to the excitement of the startup environment and joined the user-generated reviews site Qype.com where he works as their UK Community Manager.
One of the sessions at Local Social Summit ’09 that we are looking forward to is an interactive lab session being run by Praized’s Seb Provencher. The session is called: What does the Perfect Local Media Company Look Like in 5 Years Time. This lab should draw upon Seb’s excellent white paper – “I Have Seen the Future of Local Media” – from earlier this year.
At dinner last night we had a lively and interesting discussion with both Seb and Greg Sterling about this topic. The general consensus was that most traditional local media companies are quickly running out of time to start planning for their future. Greg also blogged about our discussion earlier today.
Here’s the presentation Seb will run through during the lab tomorrow:
